Etchebarren stands firm on Padgett and Esquivel
Even before the York Revolution rebounded slightly and avoided a four-game series sweep Thursday afternoon, Andy Etchebarren remained steadfast on two of the most headline-grabbing roster moves of his offseason.
His decision to trade Matt Padgett (pictured right) to Long Island and to allow Matt Esquivel to walk? Etchebarren is still liking both moves just fine.
“Absolutely I made the right decision,” Etchebarren said after Wednesday night’s doubleheader. “Listen, they’re both pretty good players. I never said they weren’t good players.
“But Matt Esquivel, with what he hit last year, he had one good month. He had one good month. … I wasn’t going to put guys here just because the fans liked them. How good did that turn out last year? You got to tell the truth.”
For their parts, Esquivel and Padgett did plenty of damage in helping the Ducks take three of four from the Revs. Esquivel had the game-winning hit in Tuesday’s victory. Padgett’s two-run homer served as the foundation for Long Island’s second win on Wednesday night.
Both men were acting as a pair in their attempts to negotiate raises with the Revs during the winter.
Nonetheless, Etchebarren appeared undeterred by their recent success against the Revolution.
“I’m sure the two of them are jacked up as high as they can get,” the York manager said. “They’re so happy they beat us three in a row. You know? I’m sure they are. I don’t blame them. That’s part of baseball.”

The bad thing about that logic is that if there are “fan favorites” then there are “fans”…then there are seats being filled…I went to every home game last year and this year and so far I’ve noticed, with the exception of the home opener, many seats empty…don’t get me wrong this years team has talent but without a few favorites it’s hard to become emotionally attached to the team….I know it’s still early in the year but it would have been nice to see some familiar faces on the field the beginning of this year…
