Hill coming on strong

On a rather uneventful morning in spring training, Jamar Hill strolled to home plate in batting practice and hilarity ensued.

jamar-hill.JPGThe entire York Revolution makeshift defense slid over to the left side of the diamond. Meaning four outfielders, three infielders and a couple of positions you’d see in beer league softball were all to the left of second base.

This approach, of course, was to mock Hill’s dead-pull approach at the plate. Although he didn’t mind the practical joke one bit.

“I’m aiming to pull the ball,” Hill said matter-of-factly then. “(But) I’m usually good for probably about five opposite-field home runs a season. But that’s definitely on accident. It’s not something I try to do.”

This leads us to an interesting question: Why mess with what’s working?

Hill’s 4-for-5 night at the plate Wednesday in an 8-6 loss to Somerset served as one of the Revs’ best offensive performances of the season.

Hill pulled the ball with authority. He slapped an opposite-field single to right field. Then he clanked the Arch Nemesis with a two-run double, giving York a lead at the time.

The night was even more impressive considering Hill, the Revolution’s fifth outfielder, was having a tough time finding at-bats prior to Wednesday. That may not be a problem in the foreseeable future.

Hill was again in the lineup for Thursday’s finale with the Patriots.
